During Friday practice, the Wayne Anderson Racing prepared Sonny's BBQ Chevy Impala SS was decent right off the trailer. A few adjustments were made to help the car turn in the middle of the corner, and the car showed improvements. There were a few cars that ran faster lap times than Austin though.
On Saturday, Austin practiced one time and said the car felt great, so he pulled in and the crew prepared the car for qualifying. For qualifying, Austin would run two fairly quick laps that would put him 6th place. He complained that the car was very tight going into the corners and that hurt his time. The pill draw didn't help Austin any as he pulled a 6 pill meaning he would start... 6th.
On the start of the race, Austin would blow by two cars to put him in 4th place. The preceding 20 laps would be filled with cautions as the field tried to get settled in. On about lap 30, Austin got to the outside of the 3rd place car just as the 3rd place car drove into the back of the 2nd place car. As the 2nd place car spun up the track, Austin made a great wreck avoidance to miss the spinning car by mere centimeters. The two cars involved in the wreck were sent to the back and Austin was moved up to 2nd behind teammate and car owner, Wayne Anderson. In the early stages of the run, Austin looked like he had a faster car than Wayne, but couldn't get around him. As the race wore on, Austin's car would get loose off the corners and Wayne would pull away. Steve Dorer would also get around, putting Austin in 3rd where he would eventually finish. After the race, Austin had this to say about his performance. "This was a good turnaround race from the 1st race of the season. I'm glad our Sonny's BBQ machine made it home in one piece and handled well even though it started to fade later in the race. I'd like to thank Wayne Anderson for letting me drive this #85 car and helping us out so much, my Mom and Dad for all they do, my crew chief Dave Pletcher, Ronnie Enfinger, Ryan Blair, and Tyler Smith. We had a great points night and hopefully we can do even better in two weeks at Auburndale Speedway"
